Skincare Tips & Advice

Our skin explained

As we age our skin goes through structural changes that affect its appearance. Sun exposure, lifestyle habits and internal factors all lead to the key biochemical reactions that trigger skin aging, which manifests as wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation and dehydration.

IN OUR 20’S

Environmental damage and constant exposure to damaging UV rays begin to take their toll on skin. Free radicals attack the skins structural integrity. Cell renewal and turnover rates begin to decline.

IN OUR 30’S

Collagen and elastin degrade, resulting in our first wrinkles. Cell renewal and turnover continue to decline, leading to a dullar complexion and uneven skin tone.

IN OUR 40’S

By our 40s, the skin is thinner, barrier lipids are not as pronounced and dehydration can be an issue. More prominent signs of aging may also appear, such as dark spots and significant dullness.

50s PLUS

By our 50s the protective barrier lipid layer lessens, leading to less efficiency in retaining moisture and more potential for sensitivity and dehydration. Skin shows wrinkles, fine lines and pigmentation.

How do I help my skin?

The best advice we can give is to follow a good skincare regime morning and at night. Every day we need to cleanse, tone and moisturise.

There are then lots of extras we can add to target our specific skincare needs or goals.

Firstly we will begin to talk about exfoliators.

Exfoliation is critical for all skin conditions. Dermalogica our leading skincare range here at Chique recommends pairing one day of intense exfoliation with a week of gentle exfoliation to more effectively stimulate cell renewal rates, reduce signs of premature aging, improve skin texture and brighten.

Exfoliation can also help minimize the signs of skin aging and hyper pigmentation (age spots), by lifting dull, discolored cells that give skin a mottled appearance. Pair with specific treatments for the signs of aging or hyperpigmentation for maximum skin smoothing and brightening.

Some of my favourite exfoliators are:

Multivitamin thermafoliant

This powerful, self-heating skin polisher combines physical and chemical exfoliants to refine skin texture, promote skin firmness, and enhance penetration of age-fighting vitamins into skin. Antioxidants help suppress the formation of collagen-degrading MMPs, brighten skin tone, defend against damaging free radicals (Reactive Oxygen Species) and help promote skin firmness. Formulated without artificial fragrances and colors.

Daily Microfoliant

Dermalogica’s number one exfoliant! Gentle, Rice-based exfoliating powder activates upon contact with water, releasing Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead cells, instantly leaving skin smoother and brighter. Formulated without artificial fragrances and colors.
